From 1998 to 2014, through the calendar year in the quadrennial Wintertime Olympics, the NHL suspended its all-star recreation and expanded the normal all-star break to allow NHL players to be involved in the Olympic ice hockey tournament. In 2018, the NHL did not schedule an Olympic break, leading to their players not taking part in that calendar
